Before Cathay Pacific could fly nonstop between New York and Hong Kong, the route travelled via Vancouver, where passengers could take advantage of a rare fifth-freedom service. In 1998, Cathay made aviation history with its first transpolar flight, flying over the North Pole, before regular nonstop JFK–HKG service began in 2004.
